If 2011 is anything like 2010, Ed Moran will cement his place among America's best distance runners and become a strong candidate to become an Olympian in 2012. Moran, a native of Dayton, will begin 2011 representing the United States at the Men's International Team Challenge at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country in Scotland on Jan. 8.

William and Mary's Director of Athletics Terry Driscoll announced the resignations today of Alex Gibby '97, formerly the head men's cross country and track coach, as well as Kathy Newberry '00, who held the same post for the women. Gibby will be taking the post of head men's cross country and distance coach at Michigan, while Newberry will be focusing on developing her professional running career. "As Head coaches," said Driscoll, "Alex Gibby and Kathy Newberry made outstanding contributions to our Men's and Women's Track and Field programs on a national, regional and conference level with team and individual achievements. We wish them much continued success in their futures."

Drug testers did not summon Gary Snyder three years ago to provide a urine sample at the world masters track and field championships in Riccione, Italy, and he's plenty happy about that. After his competition in the 100 and 200 meters for 60- to 64-year-old men, Snyder realized that his prescription medication for high blood pressure qualified as a prohibited, performance-enhancing substance.

The 11th annual Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k presented by POWERade has set an event record for the number of participants registered. As of Monday morning, March 1, over 33,500 were registered, breaking last year's mark of 32,745. Registration is still open for the March 27, 2010, Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k, and a total of 35,000 registrants will be accepted. That means less than 1,500 spots left!

The SunTrust Richmond Marathon has broken its event registration record. More than 14,650 people had registered by yesterday afternoon for either the marathon, half-marathon, 8K or kids' run. That surpasses the mark of 14,601 set last year. The record includes 5,150 people signed up for the marathon, breaking 2007's mark of 5,150. This marks the ninth time in 11 years that the marathon has set ...

Tough economic conditions seem not to have affected the SunTrust Richmond Marathon. Race officials say record participation is possible in the 26.2-mile marathon and the 13.1-mile McDonald’s Half Marathon despite a nationwide recession that has chilled sports from NASCAR to high school. The existing records: 5,109 for the marathon, set in 2007; 4,616 for the half marathon, set last year.

For the second year in a row, Brooks is rolling out the VIP porta-potty experience for Brooks supporters running the Marine Corps Marathon this weekend. Any runner wearing Official MCM 2009 or any Brooks-branded product on race day and you're in gear (n any serious runner knows you don't wear the official merchandise on race day!) So what does the VIP experience get you? Inside the VIP Porta Potties you can expect Men's and Women's Suites, flushing toilets in private stalls, a stainless-steel sink with running water, mirrors, lights, climate-controlled temperature, and paper towels.

Cross Country Sweeps Meet From ACC Power Tar Heels and N.C. Central

The Richmond men's and women's cross country teams swept the University of North Carolina Challenge Friday evening, beating the host Tar Heels and N.C. Central in Chapel Hill, N.C. Jenn Ennis and Tim Quinn each led the Spiders for the second-consecutive meet. Although Tar Heels were the individual race winners on each side, the Spiders' Ennis led six women in the top 10 and Richmond beat North Carolina 25-32 and N.C. Central 25-80. Quinn also placed second and was one of six Spiders in the top 10 as the Spiders nipped the Heels 28-29, and beat N.C. Central 28-79.

Junior half-marathon world record holder Abebu Gelan (left), 19, led a sweep of the women's professional race, leading Ethiopia to victory in the first International Team Challenge at the 9th Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach on Sunday morning. Countrywomen Tiki Gelana and Meseret Mengistu finished second and third. The Ethiopian women were ably supported by second and third place finishes by their teammates Feyisa Lilesa and Zenbaba Yigeze in the men's professional race behind race winner William Chebor of Kenya.
