G. Larry James dies at 61; runner won gold, silver medals at 1968 Olympics

Larry James, a middle-distance runner known as "The Mighty Burner" who employed his streaky speed to win gold and silver medals in track at the 1968 Summer Olympics, died of colon cancer at his home in Smithville, N.J., on Thursday, his 61st birthday. His death was announced by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he spent 28 years as athletic director.

Manalapan distance runner Robby Andrews turned in a huge day at the New Balance Games on Saturday. One of 12 boys running in the invitational mile at The New Balance Track and Field Center at the New York Armory, Andrews won in a time of 4:12.48.

Bob Kennedy made a visit to the Nassau Street store Friday as part of the promotion of the new Puma cross country spikes, and the crowd to meet the American record holder in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters almost spilled out onto the sidewalk. "I think it was a great turnout," said store manager Becky Miller. "It was a perfect time for him to come with so many kids starting their seasons. He gave out some really good training tips and talked about his personal experiences. It was the perfect time of year for it."

The indoor track and field season has been one long road trip.With limited venues in which to compete, indoor track and field coaches and athletes have traveled all over the Northeast this winter searching for meets. The New York Armory has provided the setting for most of the action, but Boston University and Dartmouth College have been destinations as well.
